Prep & Aftercare

Following these steps will help you achieve the best results. Please read carefully.

Before Your Spray Tan (Preparation Tips)

Preparing your skin properly helps achieve an even, long-lasting tan.

In the Week Before Your Appointment:

  • Exfoliate and moisturise regularly to remove dead skin and keep your skin soft and hydrated.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your skin nourished from within.
  • Complete any other beauty treatments before your spray tan — waxing, nails, facials, lashes, etc.

24 Hours Before Your Tan:

  • Exfoliate your entire body, focusing on dry areas like elbows, knees, feet, and ankles. Don’t forget your face!
  • Use an exfoliating mitt, sponge, or scrub for best results.
  • Choose a pH-balanced body wash before your tan and throughout its duration. Avoid moisturising or creamy body washes (e.g., Dove) as they may create a barrier.

Hair Removal Guidance:

  • If waxing, do this at least 24-48 hours before your spray tan to allow your pores to close fully.
  • If shaving, exfoliate afterwards, especially if using shaving gels or razors with moisturising strips, as these can leave residue.

On the Day of Your Tan:

  • Avoid showering right before your appointment — shower at least 4 hours earlier to allow your skin’s pH to settle.
  • Do not apply moisturiser, perfume, deodorant, or makeup after your shower, as these will act as barriers.
  • Thoroughly cleanse your face with water — avoid wipes as they may leave a residue.
  • Remove all jewellery and contact lenses.
  • Bring and wear loose, dark clothing and flip-flops or loose-fitting shoes. Tight clothing, socks, or straps can rub the developing tan.

After Your Spray Tan (Development Phase)

To allow your tan to develop evenly:

  • Wear loose clothing.
  • Avoid sweating or exercising.
  • Do not swim, bathe, or wet your skin.
  • Avoid applying moisturisers, lotions, or deodorants.
  • Keep hands away from your body to prevent transfer.
  • Do not wear socks or closed shoes.
  • Your palms and fingertips will be wiped after your tan to help prevent hand staining — any marks afterwards are usually from touching developing tan.

Development Time:

  • Classic Tan: Leave on for a minimum of 8 hours.
  • Rapid Tan: I will advise you on your specific rinse time.

Your First Shower (Rinse Guide)

  • Rinse using only water and your hands until the water runs clear. This removes the guide colour.
  • Do not use soaps or shower gels at this stage.
  • Gently pat your skin dry with a towel (no rubbing).
  • Apply a water-based moisturiser straight after your first rinse.

Spray Tan Aftercare (Maintain Your Glow)

  • Moisturise daily using a water-based lotion such as Nivea. Avoid oil-based moisturisers, as they will break down your tan.
  • Avoid products with Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) as they cause exfoliation and fading.
  • Pat skin dry after showers — avoid rubbing.
  • Hands and face will fade faster due to regular washing.
  • Avoid long baths, swimming, or saunas, as these can cause quicker fading.
  • If this is a holiday tan, consider using a gradual tanning lotion alongside your spray tan — feel free to ask me for recommendations.
  • From Day 4 onwards, gently exfoliate every few days to ensure an even fade and prepare your skin for future tans.

Important:
Your spray tan does not protect against UV rays. Always wear SPF to protect your skin and prevent sunburn. I recommend a mineral-oil-free lotion to preserve your tan.

With proper care, your tan will usually last 5-7 days — some clients even report longer!
